Lighten Up! Finding Just the Right Light
Finding that just-right light fixture for a home can be down-right vexing. A home needs a certain original atmosphere that only the people living in it can provide. Each individual might have a different perspective on that important issue… lighting.
Fortunately, and perhaps confusingly, there are many different lights and styles to choose from. You want to make the correct choice to meet your style and needs right from the beginning, because you don’t want to be replacing these items in future. Still, you don’t want to bear with a light fixture that doesn’t quite do the job, or leaves the atmosphere in the room a little ‘off’ for some reason.
Here is some help with different kinds of lights and where they might fit best in your home. Pendant lights are, as the name suggests, lights that hang down. They are often created from brushed nickel, copper, stainless steel or other metals. The metals can be chosen to correspond with the room décor and really shine up the area. pendant lights can have multiple bulbs or one main bulb that lights the room. They come in a variety of styles, depending on the homemaker’s choice. Traditional or Victorian styles would complement a room full of lovely antiques, while the contemporary styles might be just the thing for the spare, clean modern look.
glass chandeliers bespeak grace, wealth and elegance, and so they are still very popular. They come in many styles, one of the most well-known being the wrought- iron chandelier making its bold statement in entryways.
crystal chandeliers are the epitome of high-style. Their simple lines with hundreds of ice-crystal drops shining on all facets are a focal point for all. They are at their most lovely when suspended above a dining table set for guests. Picture a festive table setting, enhanced with suspended crystal droplets dimmed to moonlight! The soft, glowing atmosphere can be created with a simple dimmer switch.
Surprisingly, crystal chandeliers can be used to accent a smaller room with a lovely effect, too. A smaller room need not be boring. Careful selection of proper furniture and the addition of a graceful chandelier can change a room from dull to dynamite.
Lamps are needed to create the cozy atmosphere that makes a house a home. They light specific areas well, and the light has a particular warm glow that ceiling lights cannot achieve. They bespeak the hushed atmosphere of a book perhaps, and bedtime. They make a hobby table light up or a sewing nook come to life. Floor lamps are very helpful in lighting larger areas, and still keeping the friendly, family atmosphere of the table lamp.
Wall sconces are a fairly new decorative idea at present, but in reality the idea of a wall sconce is hundreds of years old. In European castles of five hundred years ago, the only lighting to be had was that of the massive fireplaces, and burning rushes fastened to the walls. At some point these were replaced by sconces, a cup-shaped fixture, perhaps even an animal horn, that held material that could be burned and create a somewhat smoky illumination. Nowadays, wall sconces are the new lighting trend for mantles, hallways and fireplaces. They are now made of glass, wrought-iron and other materials. They don’t give off a great deal of light, but they are placed in areas where that much lighting is not required. They have many beautiful light colors to choose from, and a dim atmosphere is awash in these shades.
Proper lighting does more than simply provide utility for eyesight. Pendant lights, crystal chandeliers, area lamps and wall sconces are some specific choices to add character and style to the home you live in. A house is not a home until it takes on a special personality all its own. It tells of you, and your particular creative vision. Light up, and brighten your own corner!
